-
Adonai
-
Hebrew title for Supreme Lord, designated by the letters YHWH, or, popularly, Yahweh (YHWH is also known as the Tetragrammaton). The Jews used Adonai as a substitute for God's name, which they fervently believed should be reverenced by not being spoken aloud. That Adonai is technically the plural form of Adoni does not imply that there is more than one God; its usage may be what is termed "plural of majesty," similar to a person of earthly royalty referring to himself with the plural we instead of singular I. See also Jehovah; YHWH.
