Catholic monk; d. 1153; medieval theologian and leading monk of a monastery in Clairvaux, France. In 1128, Bernard attended a gathering of church leaders in Troyes; wanting to ensure the safety of pilgrims making their way to Jerusalem, Bernard encouraged church leaders to create an order of monks to protect them.
