An organism with both male and female sex organs. Rarely found among vertebrates, there are nevertheless a few human beings so biologically identified. Sometimes ‘‘hermaphrodite’’ is ascribed to persons ambiguous about their sexual identity. The Da Vinci Code makes much of the notion that the Mona Lisais androgynous, suggesting (to Dan Brown) the hermaphrodite fusion of Isis and Amon, ancient Egyptian deities (DVC, 120–21).
