Holy of Holies, The

Innermost chamber of the ancient Jewish tabernacle and temple, where the high priest sought atonement for the people’s sins and where the Ark of the Covenant was kept. Dan Brown makes at least two incredible claims about the Holy of Holies:

  • "Beneath the Holy of Holies, a sacred chamber where God Himself was believed to reside," the Knights Templar found proof that Jesus had children with Mary Magdalene (DVC, 159–60).
  • "Early Jews believed that the Holy of Holies in Solomon’s Temple housed not only God but also His powerful female equal, Shekinah" (DVC, 309).

First, the Jews did not believe that God lived in the Holy of Holies. When Solomon dedicated the temple, he said, "Will God really dwell on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built!" (1 Kings 8:27).

Second, although nine Knights may have explored the area beneath the Temple Mount in the early 1100s, no evidence suggests that they found any documents, and certainly not proof that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married. Also questionable is how ancient Christian records would have ended up beneath the Jewish temple in the first place.

Third, Shekhinah [Hebrew spelling] was not God’s "powerful female equal." The word, which doesn’t appear in the Bible, means "the dwelling one," and it was used by later rabbis to describe how God lives among his people.
