Jesus Seminar, The

Controversial high-profile study group, founded in 1985 by biblical scholar Robert Funk, that seeks to determine what Jesus actually said and did. As they’ve approached the texts about Jesus, the majority of the Seminar’s scholars have assumed that the miraculous elements of his life are fictional. Having started with this biased assumption, it’s not surprising that the Jesus Seminar has concluded that Jesus was a human being, born of a human father, and that his resurrection was based on the visionary experiences of Peter, Paul, and Mary (Funk, The Acts of Jesus, 1998). The following respected biblical scholars (and others) have thoroughly debunked Jesus Seminar claims: Luke Timothy Johnson (The Real Jesus); Ben Witherington III (The Jesus Quest); N. T. Wright (Jesus and the Victory of God ); William Lane Craig (Will the Real Jesus Please Stand Up? ); Craig Blomberg (The Historical Reliability of the Gospels); J. P. Moreland and Michael J. Wilkins (Jesus Under Fire: Modern Scholarship Reinvents the Historical Jesus); Peter Jones (Stolen Identity: The Conspiracy to Reinvent Jesus). See also Blomberg, Craig; Jones, Peter; Witherington, Ben, III.
