Hebrew for ‘‘repetition’’; traditions passed down from the Jewish rabbis, gathered by Rabbi Judah Ha-Nasi around AD 200. Commentaries on the Mishnah are known as Gemara (Hebrew for ‘‘completion’’). Together, the Mishnah and the Gemara form the Talmud (Aramaic for ‘‘teaching’’). See also Talmud.
