-
temple, Solomon's
-
Constructed around 1000 BC, the first built for the God of Israel; destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 BC. According to Dan Brown, Jewish men used Solomon's temple to engage in Hieros Gamos (DVC, 309); the Old Testament, however, specifically expresses God's displeasure with those seeking deeper divine experiences through ritualistic sex, referring to them as "cult prostitutes" (Deut. 23:17). When the Israelites did allow ritualistic sex around their temple (1 Kings 14:24), righteous kings such as Josiah destroyed their structures (2 Kings 23:7; 2 Chron. 34:33; cf. 1 Kings 15:12; 22:46). See Hieros Gamos; temple, Herod's.
