Temple Church, The
-
Built in London soon after an 1128 recruiting campaign by Hugh de Pay-ens, promoting the newly organized Knights Templar. While in London, Dan Brown's fictional characters Neveu, Langdon, and Teabing are seeking final clues about the Holy Grail; Teabing claims the church's round shape is pagan and was intended to honor the sun (DVC, 329, 338). On the contrary, the Temple Church modeled Jerusalem's Church of the Holy Sepulchre, built by Constantine in 335 on the site Christians believed Jesus to have been crucified. The Temple Church's original interior was most likely colorful and ornate like others of the medieval period, but during the Reformation the walls were painted white and the effigies on the floor covered. In 1840, attempts were made to restore its original condition; following bombing damage in 1941, very little of the original Temple Church remains. See map of London, page 202.
